Zmoothiez met the best weed breeders and growers in Humboldt County, California.
Our excursion began at the home of Sunshine, a passionate cannabis grower in the middle of the Avenue of the Giant Redwoods, a magical place where she cultivates in total communion with nature.
- Organic cannabis at the foot of the giant sequoia
- The benefits of biodynamic cannabis
- What is regenerative weed growing?
- Exchange and share weed strains
Weed grown in harmony with the environment
His Sunboldtgrown regenerative farm is based on the principles of self-sufficient cultivation, respecting the biodiversity of a naturally rich ecosystem to obtain the best expression of its genetics. The plants simply grow without the addition of fertilizers or pesticides, using water only during the transplanting phase. Morning dew and rainfall are all the plants need to develop harmoniously.
Less fertilizer but a very aromatic weed
The plant structure is much smaller, but the resin, aromas and terpenes are more intense and multiplied. For some years now, she has been selecting and working on a particularly fruity and sweet variety, the famous Loopy Fruit, which we were lucky enough to be able to taste last year. The high of this creation is particularly euphoric and pleasant. A year’s curing has added a very caramelized character. She takes particular care with the ripening of her plants, choosing to harvest them at the ideal moment, even if it means losing part of the crop to mildew caused by autumn rains. The flowers are gently picked and left to cure slowly over a very long period.
Among the best cannabis flowers we’ve ever tasted.
The result is more than satisfying: her flowers were some of the best we tasted on our trip. We were deeply inspired by this woman’s work, driven solely by her passion for this plant and the magic of this age-old forest. As the icing on the cake, knowing our love of hash and our work in crossbreeding and selection, she did us the immense honor of offering us exclusive seeds of her latest creation, a cross between Purple Nepal and Rebel Moon aka Norcal. The Zmoothiez collection is growing. Flavors of vanilla, creamy ice cream and sweet, fruity sweets to be found in our next creations!
Weed ” Ocean Grown “
Then in Trinidad, we met Jesse from Biovortex, one of the best breeders and growers in this region of Northern California, as inspiring as the redwood forest we’d just left, with its magical beach, powerful ocean and majestic bay.
All the colors of weed
Its delicate crosses of different genetics produce magnificent flowers in multicolored hues and shades ranging from lime green to electric pink to the darkest purple. With scents and flavours as complex as they are delicious. Real hashish plants. Co-founder of the “regenerative farming” movement, he plays an active role in disseminating and informing people about natural and ecological growing methods, and campaigns for the cultivation of cannabis. He passes on his knowledge through various media and social networks, and hosts conferences including the Emerald Cup. He also contributed to the writing of Mama Editions’ new Bio Grow Book and the comic strip Jardiner Bio.
What is regenerative cannabis cultivation?
We asked him what the concept of regenerative cultivation meant to him: Regenerative cannabis cultivation is about working in harmony with nature, building soil, developing biodiversity and giving back to the earth what it has given us. This permaculture concept brings together the cannabis community who share the same philosophy: exchanging seeds, selecting the best genetics according to climate adaptability, preserving genetic diversity and discovering new medicinal properties. The sharing of genetics enables better preservation, while the work of selection enables plants to adapt better to their environment and become more resistant.
Sharing cannabis genetics
His work on Cherry Lime Dog is a fine example of sharing. A few years ago, Jackson aka Meangene, a famous breeder from the Mendocino region of California, shared one of his varieties with the community: Hgas Cherry Lime Pop. After a wide selection by different farms, they were able to isolate phenotypes with fermented cherry flavors and very euphoric effects. The following year, Jesse crossed him with a 5th generation Black Dog Kush male. The result was particularly incredible, with highly complex but delicious new aromas and explosive effects.
Every year, the work evolves with new crosses and back-crosses offering infinite possibilities. It’s always with pleasure and passion that Jesse visits and discovers all his varieties, with their magnificent colors and enchanting aromas.
The Zmoothiez team would like to thank Jesse from Biovortex for his kindness, his sense of sharing and for giving us the chance to grow his wonderful genetics.
