The Exclusive interview with Frenchy Cannoli

Thanks to Frenchy Cannoli, who quotes us after the best Californian Breeders in this interview in French conducted on his Instagram on November 29, 2020. Here’s the transcribed excerpt.

Mrs Cannoli: What’s the secret behind California [cannabis strains] tasting so intense [when processed into hash]?Mrs Cannoli: What’s the secret behind California [cannabis strains] tasting so intense [when processed into hash]?

Frenchy Cannoli: Genetics first and foremost and they’re strong [Californians].
All the hashmakers there are in the States are hellish. All the concentrates, people are really into concentrates here.
But everything we produce in concentrates comes from the plant! It comes from the breeder! It comes from the genetics, it comes from the farmer, it comes from the place where it grew! Terroir. Northern California’s terroir is hellish, with hundreds of microclimates. An Indian summer that lasts and lasts, which is also why they make such exceptional wines.
It’s the geography, it’s the terroir of California. And many of these terroirs were created by 25 years of illegal living in the mountains of Northern California.

Mrs Cannoli: Give us ideas of genetics that are good for making hash. Which breeders make genetics you like to use?

Frenchy Cannoli: My favorite is Aficionado.
Then you’re lucky in Europe because you’ve got Aficionado French Connection which is the association of Aficionado Nord-Cal with a French breeder who does exceptional stuff.
There’s the runner-up right behind, Freeborn Selections, Mean Gene From Mendocino.
Then there’s 3rd Gen and Shiloh Massive.
That’s all really local, a bit bigger in California, I’d go to Bodhi Seeds, that guy does some hellish stuff.
Things you’ll come to know, TGA: all their genetics have hellish trichome production. Besides that, a company that’s really good, that I like: MTG.They have a strain called Orange Turbo, the stuff gives me between 18 and 20% yield [of hash] and when you let it age [the hash], it’s like an Orange Brandy but with gas. Sweet, skin, Brandi, orange, funky, with Sour D, gas, all together [these flavors], it’s extreme.Sinon Sour Diesel. All the hashmakers here in California put it in the top five. It’s my second.OGs, we have a lot of OGs here that are exceptional. It comes from the same genetics. The original source of OG is two plants, but it transforms.Taho OG is super different from San Fernandino OG Valley which is in Southern California. Or the OGs they grow in the mountains in California, you’ve got a little bit of everything.OG is really the funky, funky gas kind. But there’s a lot of OG that’s starting to have fruit tones in it or like milk ice cream, vanilla, hazelnut and so on. And the layers, the layers are really exceptional too.I don’t know what you have in France, so I’m telling you what’s going on here [in California], I don’t know the genetics in France.

Mrs Cannoli: If you use Californian [cannabis] genetics, planted here [in California], what results do Europeans get with the same genetics planted there?
If people bought weed genetics here in the US and grew them in France, for example, would the result be the same?

Frenchy Cannoli: If you’re French, check out Zmoothiez. I’ll post their link.

Mrs Cannoli : Zmoothiez ?

I met them when they came to my first workshop at Spannabis Barcelona. We gave them some Leo genetics that had been bridled in the Mendocino mountains.
They adapt to the Mediterranean climate! Zmoothiez Genetics voilà, they’ve grown us Aficionado stuff in southern Europe, at Mediterranean level. The Mediterranean climate is really very beneficial to plants that have been bridled in northern California!
It’s not really the same climate but they get used to a level! It’s almost naturally more beautiful on a certain level than what I’ve seen in the Mediterranean. So yes, it’s adaptable.

If you want to grow something, you have to calculate. Are you going to grow feminized plants, for example? We don’t have that here. Aficionado French Connection has just created a feminized line, but here in California we don’t work with that at all, ever. So it’s going to be natural seeds [regular seeds].You’re going to have to know whether they’ve been produced outdoors or indoors if you want to grow indoors or outdoors. If you want to grow cannabis seeds indoors that have been bridled outdoors, it’s going to take a while for the mom you’re going to keep to create clones to get used to indoors. And vice versa, if you want to grow outdoors but buy genetics that have been restricted indoors, it’s going to take a while for the plant to adapt.

Mrs Cannoli: And so these Zmoothiez [seeds], can they be bought in Europe, in Spain?

Frenchy Cannoli: You’ll have to check with them, I’m not really sure, I think they have their genetics in some distribution centers but I’m not sure.

Conclusion:

Frenchy concludes with a reminder of the importance of terroir and genetics in the production of quality hash. His advice, based on decades of experience, is an invaluable guide for any cannabis enthusiast or professional.
